unruly roofus

last night roofus snatched the last two bites of ava's cheese stick. preston (who is alone with the kids) tries to explain to ava (who tearfully asks for him to get it back) that the cheese stick is a goner and she wouldn't want it back anyway because it has dog breath on it. and when ava says roofus is a bad dog, preston corrects her by saying "roofy isn't a bad dog, he just did a bad thing."

this morning, ava relates this whole story to me and after she finishes her fresh cheese stick at lunch she lets me know that it now has "little girl breath" on it....

10 days ago, roofus had surgery to remove a lump from his shoulder. we thought it would be minor...only a couple of stitches. it turned out he needed about a dozen...the first time. when he wouldn't leave the wound alone we had to return him to the vet for staples...ouch. it hasn't been pleasant where roofus is concerned lately. he has required 24/7 supervision (including preston sleeping on the couch next to him since he can't go up/down stairs) and when we leave for short periods there is usually evidence of his ire. wrapping his "scratching" foot and keeping a t-shirt on him has worked for now, but he keeps eating through the shirts...

i keep trying to remind myself that roofus isn't a bad dog, he's just doing a bad thing...
